July 2021 - Round 5

The database is updated and now stands at 1903 documented arches, with 1954 documented features (including false arches).  The map is also updated to 569 arches.  We also have updated the lead list, which now stands at 203 possible arches or leads.  The database also has many photographs added, as well as other information about the arches added.  There are now some destroyed arches in the database.  These are arches that have been blown up by the state for road projects, blown up by the corps of engineers for dam/lake projects and filled in and covered up by land owners.  Remember to respect the arches.  Don't camp under arches, don't create fire rings under arches, don't carve into or spray paint the arches, and don't artifact hunt under arches.  Most of that is illegal on state or federal lands as well.

Above is an example of some destroyed features.  A Large Rock, a Chimney Rock, and a Balanced Rock were all blown up in the Red River Gorge to make way for the Mountain Parkway.

All of the Top 10's have been updated (if required) and can be found here.

If you are interested in the arches of the Red River Gorge area, please see Bill Patrick's DVD's.  He just released DVD 10 this summer.  It includes 100 new arches for you to venture to and see for yourself.

July 2021 - Round 2

The database is updated and now stands at 1716 documented arches, with 1764 documented features (including false arches).  The map is also updated to 532 arches.  Bill Fultz worked endlessly on this update.  Though it is only a handful of new arches, the database now has measurements, photos and other data for a slew of arches that it did not before.  One of our main goals is not to only collect data on the location of the known arches of Kentucky, but to also collect dozens and dozens of data points for each arch.  This makes the database stronger, more informed and extremely useful for hikers, explorers as well as scientists. Our goal is to make this database useful for many people across a range of spectrums.  We hope you enjoy it, and find it useful.  Please reach out if you have any questions, comments or additions to this database.
